Salt Dough Bunny Napkin Holders That Double As Egg Holders

Set your table this Easter with beautiful salt dough napkin holders made with love. These decorations are fun to create for all ages.

What I love about this craft idea is that the napkin rings double as egg cups.

I have left mine unvarnished and unpainted as I plan to pop mine into the compost when done. I've also decided to go for a neutral natural look and didn't add food colouring to the mixture.

SUPPLIES

  • 2 cups salt
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup plain all-purpose flour / plain flour
  • Tin foil-covered baking sheet
  • Rolling pin and butter knife

DIRECTIONS

  1. Stir the salt into 1/2 cup of water in a medium saucepan
  2. Cook over medium-low heat until hot
  3. Remove from heat
  4. In a bowl, mix the remaining 1/2 cup of water with the flour until smooth
  5. Add the flour mixture to the salt mixture
  6. Return the saucepan to the stove and cook, constantly stirring over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens into the consistency of stiff mashed potatoes
  7. Turn mixture out onto a glass plate and cover with a damp towel
  8. Allowing to cool
  9. RING: roll out the mixture into tubular lengths and then trim them down to around 10cm in length, join the ends together to create a ring, double-check the ring is the right size to hold an egg
  10. EARS: roll flat the mixture until it is about 1cm thick, using a knife cut almond shapes that are about as long as the diameter of the rings, lightly press the edge of the blade of the knife into 3/4 of the length of the ear and fold the sides up around it
  11. To connect the ears to the ring, using the flat side of the knife, press down lightly to flatten 1cm of the end of the ears, lay the ears into position, add a drop of water, place the ring on top and gently smooth the ears into the ring
  12. You can create character for each ring by adjusting the ears
  13. Bake the loaves on a tin foil-lined baking sheet at 120 degrees celsius for 2-3 hours until completely hard

Tips:

  • Try using different food colouring in Easter-themed colours to make your table warm and welcoming.
  • I left mine natural as I plan to compost mine afterwards
  • Have a small jar of water nearby to help smooth out and patch cracks as the project starts to dry
  • These napkin holders can be a special gift for your guests, too.

These Salt Dough Napkin Holders will dress up each place setting beautifully.
