Red Bull Design Sally's Board

As I'm sure you're aware I entered three designs into the Red Bull Design Sally's Board Comp. I probably was a little cocky as I thought had this one in the bag. My first ever proper art exhibition was at the Surfing World Museum, I surf, I love surfing and I get my boards customised by arty friends. But sadly neither my Hemp Do You See Turtle, Face and Fringe or Pink Flamingo were picked in Sally's top 20.

I'll be honest I was really very disappointed. However I had a look at the designs that were chosen and mine were very different in comparison. With art and design it is very subjective. I think that's what makes it even more difficult when you think you're in for a chance and turns out your not. Unlike sport you know if you've played well or bad. With art what one person doesn't like another will love.

You can still vote for my designs by 'liking' them as Red Bull haven't announced the people's choice just yet. To those already have - thank you your support means so much to me.

All of which make me proud to be Australian.

The Beauty of Yoga

I found this beautiful yoga video via the Element Eden blog. It features yoga instructor Briohny Smyth and her husband (the guy in the bed).

I myself practice yoga as a way of stretching and to help build core body strength. Though after watching this I'm inspired to do it maybe a little more often than I currently do.

After prefect DIY project results after another on the blog-o-sphere, it can be difficult to think that DIY projects go wrong on a regular basis. But they do. I recently came across Craft Fail, a blog dedicated to DIY projects that don't turn out the way they look in glossy magazines or on a blog. It's nice knowing that I'm not the only one out there that has botched up a DIY project every now and then.

Hemp Do You See Turtle

Pink Flamingo (Spray 10 of 10)

Over the weekend I dropped off two new works at Art Boy Gallery in Prahran. One you already maybe familiar with is Hemp Do You See Turtle. Both works were created to be used to create my designs for the comp that Red Bull are running for the decal design for Sally Fitzgibbons surfboard for the 2012 Surfing World Tour.

Hemp Do You See Turtle (vote here) has been up for a little while and Pink Flamingo (vote here) only recently went up on the competition website this week.

That's not all about these works. The Pink Flamingo is the last spray I'll do of that stencil. It's been wonderful to work with it since I created it for a photo shoot a few years ago. So what happens to the stencil now? Well I'll pack it away into archiving.

These two pieces are also the largest ones I've created for sometime. With each being around 1mx1m each in size. I think at first Marc at Art Boy didn't believe me when I said I'd done some big works if he'd like them in the gallery. Generally I produce smallish sized works. This is just the beginning - I've a few bigger works planned for 2012.

Christmas In Our House

I love Christmas, it's a time to share and be creative in decorating the house.

We've a few things that influence how our house is decorated; two rabbits, keeping things as environmentally friendly as possible and being as creative as possible. Oh and I also like to have a colour theme, this year it was white, black, grey and silver.

Our tree this year is actually part of a rose bush I cut back a few months ago, which the rabbits have quite enjoyed chewing on the lower branches of. I think it's made a wonderful tree none the less.

I got so excited when I heard that Red Bull were running a design competition for Sally Fitzgibbons surf boards for the 2012 ASP World Tour. For me my love of stencil art came from me wanting to customize my one surfboards. My first ever exhibition was at the Surfing Museum in Torquay. This is a dream come true and I feel I've given it my best shot.

I've submitted two designs, Face and Fringe Pink and Do You See Turtle (above). At the moment only Do You See Turtle is up in the website gallery. I would be so happy if you would 'Like' it. You can do so here.

2012 Calendar

I can't believe that it's almost the end of 2011. Where has this year gone?

To help you plan for the new year which is fast approaching my 2012 Calendars have arrived. Within just a few weeks of having them delivered I've had to do a second print run because of how popular they've been.

The 2012 calendar is A5 in size, printed on 250gsm FSC Certified, made with Elemental Chlorine Free pulps (ECF), ISO 14001 Environmental Management System stock and features a selection of my artworks, all bound using a bulldog clip which is re-useable and is packaged in recyclable materials. Making it very environmentally friendly.

PETITS TRAVAUX '11

Retrospect Galleries is celebrating its first year in the Broadbeach gallery and its fourth year in their Byron Bay gallery with the opening of Petits Travaux '11, an exhibition of miniature works from a mix of established and emerging artists. Each artist is exhibiting nine individual works that are 25cm x 25cm in size.

I've sent a selection of my animal stencil works up to both galleries. It's the first time I'm showing at Retrospect Galleries QLD gallery and the first time I think I've shown work in QLD, so I'm pretty excited! I've also sent up a few new stencils which is always nice too.

FanBoy VS ArtBoy: Sci-Fi

Nicole Tattersall - Rabbit Tales (Spray 7 of 10)

Art Boy are at it again, with the next round of FanBoy vs ArtBoy, this time it's Sci-Fi. I had some grand plans for my piece for this exhibition however the deadline very quickly crept up on me and I had to think fast. One of my favourite Sci-Fi movies is "The Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy" and with my stencil of Nickel with a book, I thought it made an interesting combination.

On Sunday I planned to finish and drop off this piece, though as fate would have it Nickel had to be taken to emergency at the vet. Meaning that alternative arrangements had to be made in dropping off the work. Nickel is okay she had an operation today on her teeth, spent last night and is spending tonight at the vet.

Now back to the topic... other artists in the exhibition include artists include: Heesco, Mike Adey, Matthew Dunn, Josh Lord, Pierre Lloga, Kareem Rizk, ADi, Rebecca Murphy, Frederic Truteau (Fr), Lisa C. (Fr), Jack Douglas and many more.

Plus Art Boy are giving punters the opportunity to decided the theme for the next FanBoy vs ArtBoy. Cast your vote on opening night and determine which theme they will kick off 2012 with!

One of my most favourite blogs to flick through on a regular basis is Creature Comforts. Lately I've noticed they've complied their posts about how to be a better blogger into one nice neat and tidy series. Whilst going through it one post that caught my eye was Blog Etiquette.

It's aimed at both writers and readers. Even though it doesn't quite cover everything it covers the basic need to know and understand stuff. Whether your a reader or a writer I recommend having a read.

Hints + Tips - PR Tips To Make Note Of

Between writing for my blog, for CURVY, my time at We Make Stuff Good and various other places, I've realised that there are some key things that make those who are good at what they do stand out even more when it comes to PR. These are just a few things that make my job so much easier when wanting to write about someone and make that person fantastic to work with.

• A press release shouldn't be longer than 1 page and no more than 1MB in size if emailing. Try to really reduce it down to the facts, add a quote and some content. I'm not kidding when I say this; I receive press releases for group exhibitions without the full list of artists, gallery address or even relevant websites such as the facebook event page and yet they'll be 3 pages long.

• Give people a chance to write about the event, sending a press release with less than a week until the event increases the chances greatly of you not having it published. When leading up to a big event, I send out a different press release about the same event about 3 months prior, another at the 1 month to go mark and the last one at at the 2 weeks to go mark. This ensures that no matter the medium they've the opportunity to write about it.

• Be timely, if someone contacts you about wanting to do an interview or featuring you work. Try to reply within 48hrs not 48days. I've found that those at the top of their field are the quickest to reply. While those who want to be at the top of their field are by far the slowest. There are deadlines even in the world of blogging, you'd hate to miss out on a feature because you were too slow to reply.

• This is more of a tip than a what to avoid doing. Keep a folder in an easy to find location on your computer with current photos of you, your studio, lifestyle like shots and your work, in different sizes. This will make it much easier for you to respond to requests for images.

Red Bull MOBILE Scout Update

Over the last month I was sharing my Red Bull MOBILE experiences on the Red Bull MOBILE Scout website. From going to the X-fighters in Sydney, being at Semi-Permanent, heading to the Moto GP at Phillip Island and much, much more. All 8 Scouts were competing for the chance to go to the Formula 1 in Melbourne. Sadly I didn't win though I'm very happy that Craig from Perth did, as he was very much deserving of it!

The whole experience was amazing and they only thing I wish is that it went for a little bit longer, a month of exciting stuff simply isn't long enough. Though I've been making my own fun and pushing my own limits - going surfing, heading to new events and just checking out stuff!

Hints + Tips - Be Found

Recently when looking for creative people to contact about projects or to feature them I've noticed about 60 - 75% of people I come across are impossible to contact or make it very hard to contact them. I wonder how many opportunities that they've missed out because people can't contact them.

Here are a few things that I wish people did to make it easier for me to show their wonderful work to the world:
• Wherever you are on the internet eg. The Loop, Etsy, Red Bubble, MadeIt, make sure that people know about your website.
• Have your email address accessible to the general public.
• If your on twitter, have a facebook fan page or use any other social media, where appropriate list them too.
• Get a friend to check out your sites ect. to give you feedback on how accessible your information is.
• Make it easy for people to contact you, though do keep in mind that you do have have to be safe on the net. Don't put up a whole pile of private contact information out there eg. home address
• On your website or blog have a contact page where you list all your relevant contact information. This is something I recently did myself.

My time as a Red Bull MOBILE Scout is almost up. Over the past several weeks, I've been to Sydney for the X-fighters, had a Hot Lap with Rick Kelly at Calder, went to the Red Bull Music Academy, checked out The Art of Flight and documented my arty goinings on in the studio and at Semi-Permament. This weekend my last experience is going to the Moto GP at Phillip Island, where I'm taking my dad and a rev head of a friend.

I've loved the whole experience and I'm sad to see it come to an end. For me, my life will go back to being study, freelance work, looking for work, painting, blogging, animal rights and a spot of surfing.

The Red Bull MOBILE Scout experience wraps up for me this Saturday. So if you've not yet checked out the website to read my posts, view my videos and see my pics, you'd best do so. Also just by leaving a comment you could win your very own Red Bull MOBILE HTC Cha Cha.

Wanting Angels - Nicole Tattersall and Fletcher Anderson

As part of Fletcher Andersen (Facter) solo show 'Angels See In Sepia' he will have several works that are collaborations. I've been working on two digital works for the show. The works will be limited Edition A4 Prints (edition of 5), plus they'll also be available as cushions thanks to the lovely peeps at Frankie and Swiss.

This is the first time I've ever done digital work and it was interesting. I will admit that I do like the flexibility that you have working digitally but I still prefer working on paper as I enjoy the risks involved in creating a work.

Sadly I weren't be able to make it to 'Angels See In Sepia' however if you are free this Thursday night and are in Melboure make sure you get along to Rancho Notorious (Upstairs from 1000 Pound Bend) to check it out.

The concept of art and skateboarding is nothing new, as both have long gone hand-in-hand as popular forms of creative expression. The Three Sixty Project launches ONE x ONE x ONE, paying homage to the creative talent we have in Australia, whilst raising funds for Skate Programs working with under-privileged youth all over the world. 2011’s inaugural exhibition sees over 50 skate deck artworks travel to Lo-Fi (Sydney), No Vacancy (Melbourne) and 19Karen Gallery (Gold Coast), showcasing a range of works by a diverse collection of Australian artists.

I'm excited to be painting live at the Melbourne event alongside both Guz and Pheelix. So please do come along and say hi, it looks to be a pretty exciting event!

New Addition

This is the latest furry addition to to family, his name is Manuel and he'll just like Nickel will be hanging out with me in my studio. We're currently getting them use to each other. Manuel came from the Lort Smith Animal Hospital and the staff there were just so lovely. They let me come in with Nickel for two bunny dates, after the second we had a good feeling that this will work. Already Manuel and Nickel have been snuggling and cleaning each other.

Though as Manuel has only recently been desexed he is spraying, trying to do things to Nickel that she wants nothing to do with and is being a little hormonal. Though in about a months time he should of calmed down. Other than that he is quite the little gentleman.

Keep your eyes out for another rabbit stencil, I can't have a stencil of one and not the other.

I'll admit I'm a bit unsure about most of the online portfolio's out there. When I came across The Loop thanks to twitter and various people recommending it to me. I liked the fact that it was in an easy to use format and that it is an Australian website.

It's a portfolio website what doesn't just let you share your work and be inspired by others, it also has the capabilities for you to search for jobs and for potential employers/clients to search for you.

Studio Time!

Whilst finishing off the rest of the the works required for the For Walls Closing Group Show I created a video for Red Bull MOBILE showing the production of just one of the pieces 'Deer'. That day I had planned to get only 2 pieces done, before I knew it I was in a groove and manged to complete a total of 6 works. It was just nice being in the studio, the sun shinning outside and having everything just work. It's like that feeling I get when I go surfing and have an amazing session. Turns out it was a good thing as the following few days here in Melbourne have been horrible with rain, wind and coldness, I wouldn't of been able to get the works completed in time for the exhibition, if I hadn't done them all in the that one session.

End of an Era - For Walls is Closing

It’s been an amazing year and a half for For Walls, they've hosted over 20 shows including many group shows which I've been delighted to of been a part of and also 'Drip' the recent duo exhibition I did with Megan Dell earlier this year. But sadly it’s now time for the For Walls Gallery, the brainchild of Bo Kitty, to close it’s doors.

To celebrate the end of an era, they are puling out all the stops and putting on a massive group show with the artists who throughout the time held solo shows in the space and a few other artists that they just couldn’t leave out. Artists include Pheelix, Ghetto Kitty, GUZ, HAHA, Glyph, Megan Dell , Sarah Beetson, Ollie Lucas, Matt Grant , Elizabeth Lugg, Thomas Delohery, Aubrey Rhodes, Heesco, Lani Siow, Ben Millar, Liddlewing and myself.

Come join in on Wednesday 5 October from 6pm - 8pm for the opening of the final hurrah. There with be live hip hop/funk & soul band Mose in the backroom afterwards and Dj’s Baron Von Rotton, Rintrah and Sizzle At No Era in the front bar.

Hints + Tips - How To Write A Press Release

Press releases can be a little daunting to compile, but when done right they can make a huge difference in the publicity of an event, exhibition or anything else. Arts Hub have a great post up at the moment about how to best write a press release.

If your in Australia and into the arts I recommend signing up to Arts Hub, it's been a great resource for me, I think it's still only $14 a month.

Red Bull MOBILE Scout Blog

Hints + Tips - Optimum Productivity for Freelances

Recently as you may know I have become unemployed and am looking for part-time work in either Events Management, Social Media, Graphic Design, PR, Marketing or Fundraising. I've had a variety of different roles in the past and for some odd reason as much as they look like they don't go together they do. Whilst I've been looking for a new job I've managed to become a freelancer. This was not planned and it just happened, which I'm very grateful for, as I think sitting at home working on my own projects day in day out whilst looking for work, might just send me batty. The good thing for me is that I'am quite self driven and that's kept me stay on top of all the things that make up my life.

Recently whilst over at Freelance Folder I came across a useful article about squeezing the most out of your day as a freelancer, which can also be modified to suit any work situation I think. My favourite point is number 8 which is about striving for a work life balance. Often I hear other freelancers whinging that they have to work public holidays, that they have no weekend ect. I think it's all a state of mind and if they really wanted to create time to go to the beach they could.

Hints + Tips - Apps To Help You Be Organised

I've only had a iPhone for just over 6 months and I've found it a very useful tool with all it's apps in helping me stay organised and keep track of things. With iPhone owners having of downloaded an average of 83 apps to their phones and with over 425,000 apps in the App Store there are plenty to choose from.(source)

So what three apps have worked best for me?
• Evernote: I've Evernote also on my laptop and found it very handy when studying for exams, looking for a new job and for just general day to day stuff. It syncs via the internet and allows to also take photos, video, voice recording and map locations. You tag your notes and save them into different note books.
• Automilez: helps me keep a log of all the km's I do in my to and from galleries. It means no having to find a pen to jot down the km's, it's on something I'll generally have on me most the time anyways. I use the free version however if you use the paid version you've greater usage of the app.
• Hootsuite: Another one I also have on my laptop too. Hootsuite if your not familiar with allows you to take control of multiple social profiles from one dashboard so you don’t have to log into each one separately. Mostly I pull in my Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles, but you can also link in many other social networks.

Bird Feeder

Whilst gardening and cleaning up the yard over the past month I've been keeping my eyes open for three branches about the same size to create a free standing bird feeder. With the sun being out on Sunday in Melbourne, I couldn't help myself and finally made it.

I used a saucer that I had ear marked for going to the local op shop for the dish and some twine to hold it all together and suspend the dish. What I love most about it is that other than the twine everything else is recycled.

It's a bit Frankie and a bit Swiss

Yesterday I went into the lovely Frankie and Swiss studio to chat and talk collaboration ideas. After several cups of peppermint tea and watching the printer do it's thing. Out came various artworks of mine on a length of organic cotton. It's always exciting seeing things come off a printer.

The girls gave me the sample to do what I please with it. Though I will be honest I didn't have the foggiest idea. However after uni last night I decided to make a cushion using one of the printed artworks "Orca Passing" (Spray 2 of 10). Having not used a sewing machine for a good 6 months I was little rusty but got there in the end. The fabric I used for the back was some that I bought at a garage sale a few months ago.

The cushions are currently not for sale as they are just samples, however if you are interested in them do let me know and I'll see what I can arrange. Feel free to email me.

13. The hash (#) symbol before a word is called a hashtag, and are used as a way to categorise a tweet. You can click on a hashtag to view tweets by anyone, anywhere who has used that same hashtag in their tweet.

But sometimes, a hashtag is used as a punchline or feature of a tweet. It might catch on, it might not! E.g.

The only thing that I would add is not to worry if you loose a few followers it's when you loose 50 in a few minutes you should worry. The more you use twitter the more you'll see people come and go.

Girl With Fringe, Textile Edition - Woven Tapestry by Leanna Edwards and Nicole Tattersall

I've some pretty exciting news! The collaborative piece I did with Melbourne textile artist Leanna Edwards was accepted as one of the 50 pieces chosen for the Brunswick Street Gallery 2011 Art Prize. From what I've been told there were around 300 artists submit who submitted over 900 works.

The opening night is this coming Friday and if you happen to spot me in the crowd do say hi, but I'm sure you'll spot the glamorous Leanna Edwards from Urban Textile first though (she was recently featured in The Age M Magazine).

A Short Trip

Sealion Pup at Seal Bay

If you follow me on twitter you may have caught my tweet "Haven't tweeted in 3 - 4 days and yet I've more followers???". That in it self isn't so exciting but the reason why I hadn't tweeted in 3 - 4 days was. We'd taken a 3 night trip to Kangaroo Island located just off the coast of South Australia. We were treated with glorious weather each day. With the cool yet sunny weather we got see lots of different types of Australian wildlife.

Snake Lagoon Hike

I seriously can't remember when I last did so much walking and climbing over rocks. There are so many hikes and walks you can do throughout the island. We did a short walk around Cape Du Couedic, the Snake Lagoon Hike, the start to Platypus Waterholes Walk, the Curly Creek Walk and some smaller walks around the island. The one I recommend most is the Snake Lagoon Hike, it's a moderate hike and took us about 2 hrs but was well worth it. You walk alongside rapids and falls which lead towards the beach. Sometimes you can see water-dragons, but sadly we did not.

Koala

The wildlife on the island is what got me more excited than anything. Though I think I pointed at more rocks, little waves and small bushes saying it was some sort of animal than actually pointing out an actual animal. So much so that when I spotted a pod of about 20 bottlenosed dolphins making their way along the coast no one believed me, until they were in closer range to actually see them properly.

We saw Little Penguins, Koalas, Western Grey and Kangroo Island Kangaroos, Echidnas, Dolphins, Sealions, NZ Fur Seals, Wallabies, Black Swans, Gallahs, Black Cockatoos, Geckos, Geese and other Australian native birds.

Ligurian Bees

Agriculture on Kangaroo Island is much different to on the mainland, there are tiny specialized farms, which explore new ways of producing small crops of both traditional and unusual products, such as lavender, olive oil, eucalyptus oil and much more. In addition to agriculture, there are small-scale sheep farming, dairy farming, marron (crayfish) farming, and beekeeping which have thrived there, as have a handful of wineries. On our trip we sampled some local produce and bought back with us to Melbourne half a dozen bottles of wine, eucalyptus oil, variety of sauces and honey.

I feel all inspired from the trip and am looking forward to creating some new works inspired by what I did and saw on Kangaroo Island. Oh and so why didn't I tweet for 3 - 4 days? There is no mobile phone reception in the South of the island, which actually was quite nice.

After a morning of being inspired by a selection of the shop windows that are apart of Look. Stop. Shop. A walking trail through Melbourne’s city center that allows you to experience a series of inspiring installations by design-minded businesses for the State of Design Festival. Michelle Mulvey and I headed over to North Melbourne to Kids in Berlin where we volunteered to add a splash of colour to the shop window. The brief, was something tactile and wintery. Over a coffee and a pot of green it was decided something with clouds and rain drops, but it still had to have a handmade appearance about it. On arrival at Kids in Berlin the concept was finalised, rain drops with knitted like patterns inside them and clouds that looked like balls of wool.

It was so lovely to be able to produce artwork which has a wider scope than a wall in a gallery.

The painted window will be up until around the end of August. At which time hopefully both Michelle and I will be back painting the window at Kids in Berlin, this time with a Spring like theme.
