Hindsight

Mulgrave Makers Market

I'll be holding a stall at the Mulgrave Makers Market this Sunday. This will be my second one, and as last time the weather was shocking it will be interesting to see how it is with good weather. I already have most the things packed and ready to go.

What I'll be taking along with me are some original artworks, brooches, handmade fabric tape, bags, t-shirts, badges, cards and postcards.

So come on by and say hi, don't forget that there is also plenty of people selling fresh fruit and veg too!

Where Have I Been?

Over the past week my computer has been at the doctors getting fixed. With no computer at hand it made it a little difficult to keep on top of my blog. Though I'm back and every thing is all okay with my Mac Book Pro. Though now I just have lot of sorting ahead of me of files and documents.

Hints + Tips - Advice

Over the past few weeks I've had some amazing things happen, in my personal, work and creative lives. Most of which comes down to some very useful advice that I've either been given or have remembered from somewhere that I can't recall. I thought it would be nice to share a few of these useful tid bits of advice...

1. "They will always want you made two years ago, so just do what you want to now, because they'll want it in two years time" - fellow artist
2. "If you don't ask you'll never know" - ?
3. "You can't just sit there expecting it to come to you. You need to go out and tell people about what you do" - 90's pop group (seriously, I'm not kidding)
4. "It pays to have good manners, no matter the situation" - I'll give credit to my folks for this one
5. "As long as you enjoy it and push yourself a little bit harder each time, that's all that matters" - ex pro surfer
   

Look! The art of Australian picture books today

On the weekend I went to the Victorian State Library to see the current exhibition "Look! The art of Australian picture books today". It is a delighting and inspiring exhibition, which celebrates the worlds and stories revealed in picture books from the past 10 years. There is original artwork, sketches and drawings by more than 40 Australian illustrators are on display, including my favorites Shaun Tan, Graeme Base, Leigh Hobbs and Terry Denton.

Surf Bike Pop - Update

The opening night of "Surf Bike Pop" at Surface Pop Up will be one that I don't think I'll forget in a hurry! The opening was cut short due to gallery flooding from the intense downpour that occurred.

If you didn't make it along to the opening, you've still got plenty of time to check it out, the show will be up until Sunday 20 February. There truly are some amazing pieces of work on display and I'm still as chuffed as ever to of been apart of this amazing exhibition.

Postcard for the Dolphins

Being paid to create work can be nice, having someone buy a piece is lovely but there is no feeling quite in the world of creating a piece with the aim to push for change for something I feel passionate about.

Next weekend at the Sustainable Living Festival in Melbourne, be on the lookout for a postcard featuring my dolphin stencil. The postcards have information on them about what you can do to stop the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, Japan.

Noa Noa Spring 2011

Just had a look at the Noa Noa Spring 2011 Catalogue, it's unsurprisingly devine. Also if you've already seen Pantone's Spring color forecast for 2011 you'd notice how on the mark they are with their colours. Especially with Pantone's colour of the year Honey Suckle and their Spring 2011 forecasted Lavender, which seems to be an on going favorite of Noa Noa.

CWC - Ming-Zhu Hii, of Orlando and Ivy

Come along to the first Creative Women's Circle event for 2011. The speaker for this event is none other than the talented Ming-Zhu Hii, of Orlando and Ivy!

Ming-Zhu trained professionally as an actor, but a burning desire to foster others creative talent led her to open the North Melbourne based retail boutique, Orlando and Ivy in 2009. In between curating and managing Orlando and Ivy (which includes searching out amazing design and art objects, creative books and tools, and stationery) Ming-Zhu blogs extensively at www.orlandoandivy.com about creativity and creative business, sharing useful tidbits of her own experience leading a sweet, happy and successful life as a 'creative maverick'. Her passion is in helping other creatives reach their true potential in their businesses, and she does this through a range of online courses called The Public Studio.

Ming-Zhu will speak about her journey with Orlando and Ivy from 'big idea' to 'retail reality', and what made her decide to help artists pursue their own business dreams. She'll also step through some basic principles for thinking strategically about maintaining integrity and creative connection, while at the same time charting a course to authentic, lasting business and life success.
